Conditional Admission

Conditional undergraduate admission may be granted to applicants who do not meet the university’s English language requirement or wish to have additional English preparation before entering a degree program. To apply for conditional admission you must:

  • Have a minimum TOEFL sore of 500 (paper-based)/173 (computer-based)/61 (iBT)
  • Fulfill all other requirements for undergraduate admission
Intensive English Program

Before enrolling in their first credit class at Western, most conditionally admitted students attend the Intensive English Program (IEP) full-time for at least one quarter and enroll in IEP Academic English courses (academic preparation, writing, reading, and oral communications).

After successfully completing Academic English and scoring at least 520/190/68 on the TOEFL, the Conditional Admission student begins to take credit university classes while continuing to enroll in a part-time load of IEP classes. The IEP advisor helps the student find a balance of English-language classes and regular university coursework that will challenge the student without overwhelming the development of language and academic skills.

When the Conditional Admissions student is able to satisfy WWU's TOEFL requirement of 550/213/80, they will be granted full admission and may enroll full-time in regular university classes. Students who have completed an Associate of Arts (AA) degree or significant coursework at other U.S. institutions, prior to Conditional Admission to Western, may be able to have the Academic Preparation requirement waived and begin enrolling in regular credit classes their first quarter at Western.

Students may apply for Conditional Admission by first enrolling in the Intensive English Program, or they may apply directly to the Office of Admissions. On the International Student Undergraduate Application form, applicants should check "Conditional Admission" above the Application Type to indicate this choice.
For more information, contact the Intensive English Program office at (360) 650-3755, email to iep@cc.wwu.edu, or visit the IEP Home Page.
