English Language Requirement

In addition to meeting academic requirements, applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency by taking the standardized Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

In general, minimum TOEFL scores required for admission consideration are 550 on the written exam, 213 on the computerized exam, or 80 on the internet-based exam. If TOEFL scores do not meet minimum requirements, a grade of B (3.0) or higher in English 101 AND English 102, taken at a regionally accredited college or university, may be considered in the admissions decision. Students with lower TOEFL scores will also be considered for Conditional Admission, a program that allows students to be fully admitted to the university upon successfully completing at least one quarter of the Intensive English Program.

We will only accept TOEFL tests administered by the Educational Testing Service and sent directly by the College Entrance Examination Board to the Office of Admissions. Photocopies are not acceptable. Please be aware that scores for TOEFL tests taken after January 1 will NOT be received in time to be evaluated for Fall Quarter admission. Western’s institution code is 4947.
