English Language Requirement

In addition to meeting academic requirements, applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency. English proficiency is demonstrated by one of the following options:

  • Earning a transferable associate's degree from a Washington State Community College with "B" or better grades in English 101 and English 102;
  • Minimum TOEFL score of 80 (internet-based) or 550 (paper-based); or
  • Minimum IELTS score of 6.5.

Students may also be considered for Conditional Admission, a program that allows students to be fully admitted to the university upon successfully completing at least one quarter of the Intensive English Program.

Official TOEFL or IELTS scores should be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service to the Office of Admissions and must be postmarked by the application deadline. Photocopies are not acceptable. Western's institution code is 4947.
