International

for students who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents and are coming from abroad

International Student Types

An international student is any person who is not currently a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. International students may enroll at Western through general admission, as an exchange student offered through International Programs and Exchanges, or in non-credit English language courses offered through the Intensive English Program in preparation for applying to a degree program. Many international students transfer to Western after earning an associate’s degree from a Washington state community college. Western's Graduate School programs also attract a number of international students. Currently, Western's student body includes international students from 35 countries.

Freshman

Prospective students are considered incoming freshman if they have not enrolled in any college course work following their high school or secondary schooling.

As a freshman applicant, you must have completed secondary school and earned an appropriate secondary certification or passed an appropriate external exam. Grades must be above average and course selection must include preparatory study in humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, and social sciences. Our Freshman Admissions Page provides additional information that may be helpful.

Transfer

Prospective students are considered transfer students if they have enrolled in college courses following their high school or secondary schooling graduation.

University or college transfer students from outside the United States must have earned the equivalent of a “B” averaging in study at the Ministry of Education recognized or accredited post-secondary institution to be considered for admission. All transfer applicants applying with fewer than 40 transferable credits or 27 semester college credits must also submit their official secondary school credentials with certified English translations when necessary. Our Transfer Admissions Page provides additional information that may be helpful.

Post Baccalaureate

Prospective students are considered post-baccalaureate candidates if they have successfully completed a bachelor’s degree and are looking to attend Western to enhance their previous academic background or to secure a second undergraduate degree. Our Postbaccalaureate Admissions Page provides additional information that may be helpful.

Graduate

Students who have successfully obtained a bachelor’s degree and are looking to further their education by securing a master’s or doctoral degree are considered graduate students. Prospective graduate students should visit the Graduate School’s homepage to learn more about graduate admissions standards.
