A Good Challenge

I knew I wanted to major in communication when I chose to attend Western. I had taken a look at the Communication Department's website, and I liked what I saw.  I appreciated that getting into the major was a selective process. I know that getting a communication degree from Western means so much more than getting a degree from a university where the requirements are not so extensive.

Influential Professor

I have really enjoyed taking classes from Dr. Rae Lynn Schwartz-Dupre. She has made my experience here at Western amazing. I love her passion for teaching and she's amazingly knowledgeable. I have discovered my love for rhetoric by taking her classes.

Preparing for the Future

Right now I am taking a Professional Communication class with Jennifer Karchmer. We've been working on our resumés, and next week we are going to the career fair on campus. At the end of the quarter, we will be going through mock interviews. It has been such a great help to take this class so close to graduation. The class has pushed me to research companies for the mock interview process and it has been a great experience all around. Going into this quarter I was so nervous thinking about getting a job, but I feel like this class has prepared me for that next step.

Communication Club

I've gotten involved with the Communication Club, and our events have been a wonderful way for me to get involved. We've done a number of service-oriented activities like raising money for the American Cancer Society and collecting canned goods for the Bellingham Food Bank. Last year we also hosted a “meet and greet” for all current and prospective communication majors. We invited a bunch of faculty as well as some communication professionals in the workforce. Some students actually received internships from this event, because it was a great networking opportunity.

Outside the Classroom

My boyfriend and I love to go to movies and just hang out with friends. My boyfriend plays for the Western Baseball team, so in the spring I go to all the games. I love the guys on the team and I've become pretty close with many of the team members.

After Western

I want to work in Human Resources for a corporation. I plan to move back down to the Seattle area and start my career. Eventually I want to get married and start a family.
