Why Western?

My older sister was attending Western when I was a freshman; she was my backbone for my first year in college and someone that I could depend on if I needed any help. Also, Western is a quick ride away from home.

Making Connections

When I first applied to Western, I thought it didn’t have the diverse qualities that I was looking for in a school. I thought the only way that I would stay connected with the campus was through my involvement in the Black Student Union. I looked at this as being my only way to make friends and to my surprise I made many diverse relationships with people through experiences living in a residence hall and also through my different jobs on campus.

Inspirational Professor

One of my favorite professors has been Dr. Amy Carbajal. She was my Spanish teacher through my entire sophomore year at Western. She has inspired me to do more and go above and beyond the ‘normal’. When I was discouraged about my test scores or homework assignments, she made sure that she changed my attitude around and helped me to realize that college isn’t easy. She helped me to realize that I’m really interested in language development and that I’m very capable of studying abroad.

Life in Bellingham

The thing that I like about Bellingham is that, to me, it is just another home away from home. It is a calm, quiet, friendly place with a comfortable atmosphere and setting, and a place I wouldn’t mind living in the future.

After Western

After graduation, I plan to spend another two years at Western earning a master’s degree in Speech Pathology. During this time I plan to get plenty of volunteer experiences with my greatest passion, interacting with children who have disabilities.
