Why Western?

I chose Western Washington University because of its high-ranking education program, welcoming faculty/staff, and location (it is not too far from my family in Seattle, but far enough to get away & I love the scenery).

Discovering a Passion

I realized that I had a passion for working with children when I began volunteering at a local Boys & Girls Club. Initially I began tutoring just to give back and help the youth in my community, but I ended gaining a passion for my life time.

Developing Leaders

One of the pleasant surprises at Western is the numerous opportunities for leadership training and leadership positions. I love that Western makes it possible and visible for its community members to be involved.

Outside the Classroom

I participate in Step 2 This (Step team), Black Student Union, African Caribbean Club, Diversity Inspiring Volunteer Educators, and Teaching-Learning Academy.

A Motivated Community

What makes Western students unique and wonderful is the internal drive within majority of its students to succeed in life. All of the students here are so different from one another, yet we are here for one common goal: To succeed.

Caring Professors

The professors I have had this year really connected with the students in their classrooms and I did not expect that. In high school, teachers told me that professors wouldn’t care whether I my name was Kelly or Kelsey, but my professors do. They want to know my name and are just as concerned about my grades as I am.
