Why Western?
I initially choose to attend Western for its outstanding Journalism program. With that said, the wonderful scenery and fun outdoor activities, such as hiking, fishing and snowboarding sealed the deal.
Influential Professors
I feel fortunate to have had so many wonderful professors. However, there are three professors that really stand out as having greatly influenced me: John Harris, Shearlean Duke, and Tara Perry. These three professors have been amazing to take classes from and have been there really as professors and life mentors. They really expect the best out of their students because they believe we have the ability to achieve great things.
Hands-On Experience
My favorite course was Shearlean Duke's Public Relations Research and Campaign class. I really gained valuable insight in that class because we were required to do real hands-on public relations with an actual client. I completed with my fellow classmates to develop a public relations campaign for the Whatcom Symphony Orchestra (WSO). While the WSO was pleased with many of the proposed campaigns, they ultimately selected the one developed by my team. It was such a satisfying project, because it allowed us to utilize our various talents and create a campaign that capitalized on all of our strengths. It's great to say that all our hard work paid off.
Outside the Classroom
I love to read, write, snowboard, longboard, pretty much anything on a board, hang out with my good friends and family, and surround myself with positive influences and motivational people.
A Memorable Experience
My favorite memory at Western would be taking Stephan Howie's Travel Writing class in the summer. I attended and wrote a feature travel piece on the Sedro-Woolley Logger Rodeo in the summer of 2007.
Learning from Professionals
As part of my graduation requirements, I participated in an internship with WWU's University Communications Office. It was a great experience! I really enjoyed working in such a positive environment with credible professionals. It was also really convenient because it was located on campus and was flexible around my academic schedule.
After Western
I plan to stick around Bellingham for another year after graduation to get in some good snowboarding and to intern for a few organizations to gain substantial experience in PR that I can use to enhance my experience and resume for future jobs. Eventually, I would like to establish my own PR/Event Coordinating organization.
