In recent years, faculty from a variety of departments have received prestigious national awards and recognition for teaching and research.
- The Society of Automotive Engineers has awarded Michael Seal, founder and director of Western's Vehicle Research Institute, its Excellence in Engineering Education Award.
- Physical education, health and recreation professor Charles Sylvester was nationally recognized with an excellence in teaching award from the Society of Park and Recreation Educators.
- Professor David Patrick was awarded a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers for his research in liquid crystals. The distinction will provide 0,000 over five years to use in support of Patrick's teaching and research at Western.
- Western's Center for Instructional Innovation helps faculty enrich their teaching through campus-wide workshops, supports the innovative use of technology in the classroom, and initiates an on-going dialogue that includes the student voice.
- In a recent alumni poll, nearly 80 percent said that they had taken a course from one or more faculty members who were so outstanding that they significantly impacted that graduate's life.
- Marguerite (Zite) Hutton, chair and associate professor of Western's accounting department, recently received the prestigious American Association/Arthur Andersen Teaching Innovation Award.
