Western Washington University offers a variety of merit-based scholarships for new and continuing international students, up to $10,000 per year. Availability and amounts for scholarships are subject to change.

The First-Year IAA is a four-year merit scholarship awarded to a limited number of students who have demonstrated strong academic performance. Selection is based on information in the application for admission, including essay, secondary school transcripts, cumulative GPA, evidence of English proficiency, and submission of the application by the priority deadline; no additional scholarship application is required.

If selected, recipients are notified of their scholarship by email after the point of admission. IAA recipients will receive an annual reduction in non-resident tuition in the form of partial tuition waivers for up to four years.

A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required and students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 for annual renewal of award.

Scholarship Disclaimer: Western's International Achievement Award (IAA) is available only to students who apply for admission using Western's unique application for admission here. Students who are admitted conditionally pending successful completion of the Intensive English Program (IEP) may be eligible after successfully completing IEP and matriculating in credit-bearing classes at Western.

Scholarships cannot be applied to study abroad programs, off-campus, or other non-state supported programs.

The Transfer IAA is a two-year merit scholarship awarded to a limited number of transfer students who have demonstrated strong academic performance. Selection is based on information provided in the application for admission, including essay, transcripts from accredited post-secondary institutions, cumulative GPA, evidence of English proficiency, and submission of the application by the priority deadline; no additional scholarship application is required.

If selected, recipients are notified of their scholarship by email after the point of admission. IAA recipients will receive an annual reduction in non-resident tuition in the form of partial tuition waivers for up to two years.

All transfer applicants must have completed a minimum of 45 quarter college credits (30 semester credits) to qualify. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required and students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 for annual renewal of award.

Financial responsibility

International students must assume all responsibility for student expenses. Proof of sufficient funds is required for the visa application process to gain entrance to the United States.

Applicants need to complete the Declaration of Financial Responsibility on the application for admission, demonstrating that they can meet Western's estimated expenses for one year and that there is reasonable expectation that funds will be available for the complete course of study. Since it is difficult for international students to get jobs while in the U.S., these funds must be available from sources other than potential employment.

Acceptable evidence may take the form of:

  • notarized bank statements in U.S. funds in the student's or family's name
  • a scholastic award letter from a foundation, agency, government, industry, etc.
  • a notarized letter from an individual sponsor indicating willingness to provide support for the specified amount and accompanied by a verified bank statement

All financial evidence you submit to Western will also be required when you apply for your student visa. Therefore, you are encouraged to secure duplicate documents.
