Jessie Martin

Portrait of Western student Jessie Martin on campus.

Baton Rouge, LA

I love anything where I get to be outside. Especially activities like hiking, sailing, plant identification, and working with LEAD to take out invasive plants and allowing native plants to thrive.

Why I chose Western.

I chose Western because it felt like the right place from the first time I stepped on campus. It felt like it could be my home for the next however many years it takes me to graduate. I also knew I wanted to be an environmental major and Huxley College was where I wanted to be.

Why I chose my major.

I went to my professor and asked him what it meant to be a Geography major. I was lucky enough that there was a Geography conference later that weekend and my professor offered me a spot to see for myself what Geography was all about. I came back from that conference knowing that I was a Geography major. After I graduate, I want to do something with GIS mapping and natural resource management.

What I like most about Western.

Western has made it possible for me to take classes that I would not have taken otherwise and find clubs that I would have never thought about joining. I have been able to slowly figure out what my interests are and what I want my major to be.
