Western Washington University Policies

Western will grant up to a maximum of 45 credits for any combination of credit by examination, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and Cambridge International examinations.

Advanced Placement

Western grants credit for College Board Advanced Placement (AP) exams completed with a score of three (3) or higher. Credits are granted upon receipt of official scores (AP Transcript) from the College Board according to the following equivalency chart. Tests no longer offered by the College Board are not included on the chart below, but will be granted credit for a score of three (3) or higher; contact the Office of Admissions for more information.

If you did not request a copy of your scores be sent to Western at the time of your examination(s), you will need to order your score report from the College Board. Western's AP code is 4947. To contact AP Services by phone, call (888) 225-5427.

NOTES: Unless otherwise indicated, credit awarded is considered elective, contributing to the total number of credits required for graduation (180 quarter credits). For information about AP exams that are no longer offered, contact the Office of Admissions. For more information on General University Requirements (GUR), see Western's GUR list.

International Baccalaureate

Western Washington University will grant up to 15 credits for each approved higher level International Baccalaureate subject examination passed with a score of four (4) or above according to the chart below. Students who have passed higher level exams in subjects not listed on the chart will need to consult with the Office of Admissions. Such exams will be considered on an individual basis to determine eligibility for General University Requirement (GUR) or elective credit.*

Students who earn an IB Diploma will be awarded 15 credits distributed evenly among the GUR areas of natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. An additional 30 quarter credits may be awarded in the areas of the student’s higher level subject exams with a score of 4 or better, subject to maximum credit limits. Please contact the Office of Admissions for details.

To earn credit, students must have an official Transcript of Grades sent directly from International Baccalaureate to Western's Office of Admissions. Email transcripts.ibna@ibo.org and provide your name, birth date or candidate reference number, high school, and the year the exams were taken, and ask that your scores be sent directly to Western's Office of Admissions.

* Please note, the University is in the process of conducting a review of Higher Level exams for grades of 4, along with a comprehensive review of Standard Level (SL) subjects to determine credit award policies for exams with grades of 4 or higher.
